The camera captures an unprecedented amount of data in a scene and more information about every pixel than any other smartphone camera. Smartphone sensors are often limited by size and the amount of light they can capture. We capture 10x the amount of data about each individual pixel, which can start to rival and surpass many dedicated cameras.

The images from our camera arrays are then run through Light’s Polar Fusion Engine to create one high-quality, stunning image for you. By using multiple sensors rather than just one, we can gather 10x the light data—and the detail—in a scene. We even have different sensors capturing at different exposures. When it comes time to fuse those multiple captures together, special algorithms filter out noise, layering pixels with detail rather than accumulating artifacts. The result? Richer colors. Sharper details. Better images.

Zoom and

Our camera arrays capture everything from multiple cameras, and we have more details and information about each pixel than ever before on a smartphone. One solution with only 28mm cameras allows you to shoot at 56mm and still have 12MP, 16MP or even 20MP details across your image.

We also have camera arrays with optical zoom, further adding to the potential to capture far-away detail in your images. Zoom in on an object more than 100 feet away with incredible details. A combination of wide and telephoto cameras can create even sharper details and over 24MP resolution. Extend the range of your smartphone captures, all in a quality that starts to rival DSLR cameras.

We also utilize AI and machine learning to further improve the images. This includes the depth map quality, scene classification, and overall image quality. Depth of field control
and advanced editing controls

We calculate a 3D depth map for each image, where every pixel is precisely mapped. This depth map includes how far away different objects are in the image. For example, we will know if a rock is 2 feet away while the tree is 10 feet away. Our depth map starts with over 1,000 layers, compared to less than 10 with most other smartphone makers. We then refine it using machine learning and AI to improve it even further, creating a practically infinite number of depth layers.

Our depth map is significantly more flexible than other solutions in the market, allowing greater control across the full field of view of the camera. While other manufacturers limit depth editing to the center of the screen and specific objects (animals, people), we can generate a depth map across all portions of the image and for any object in the scene.

Currently the depth map is available via Google GDepth format and will be available via more formats in the future. The depth map creates whole new opportunities for what you can offer to customers and developers. Imagine richer 3D applications, mapping, and new image formats and editing capabilities.

Our software allows users to adjust synthetic aperture in your gallery app moments after capture. We map out each pixel and can quickly adjust the look of an image by blurring out the correct pixels based on our 3D map of the image. Users can create beautiful bokeh and adjust images anywhere from f/15 to f/2 in just a few simple steps. They can also adjust the focus point or highlight certain objects.

And that’s just the beginning. We are developing even more advanced depth editing features like tilt shift or perspective shift. Imagine a wide-angle image that feels like it’s zoomed in (a 70mm feel on a 28mm capture). Make your customers look better in every capture.

13 stops of dynamic range

Our camera array captures some of the highest levels of dynamic range, 13 stops or more, which you would normally only see in more expensive dedicated cameras costing over $1,000.

All of this is captured simultaneously, which allows Blur-free HDR, unlike most other smartphone cameras. Smartphones typically create HDR by taking multiple shots sequentially, under-exposing some while over-exposing others. This can create great results, but may not work if anything is moving in the frames since you cannot align the images properly. Since we have multiple cameras capturing simultaneously, we have each camera capture multiple exposure levels at the same time. The result? Blur-free HDR. You will be amazed when you see the details in the highlights, the shadows, and the overall range of the image. Welcome to more natural-looking images with stunning details across the entire dynamic range.

Lux Capacitor - ASIC

The world’s only multi-camera integrated circuit that can support up to 6 cameras.

Lux Capacitor is a dedicated chipset that can control and transfer image data for up to 6 cameras (or more if you use multiple chips in parallel). This chip was built specifically for computational imaging applications and optimized for mobile phones.

The Lux Capacitor is small and incredibly efficient. The chip is 14 millimeters square, and designed for its memory to be soldered on top of it, saving valuable space on your circuit boards. The chipset is also built for efficiency. It actively manages power consumption for active, preview, and standby modes, optimizing your device’s battery life.

The Lux Capacitor and camera array works with the latest chipsets such as the Qualcomm 845. The two chips transfer information to focus all camera modules, adjust exposure levels, and calculate white balance. With two MIPI transmitters, it can export data in parallel to the host system-on-chip to increase your data transfer speed. The Lux Capacitor empowers you to receive more image data from more input sources, process that data more quickly, and integrate with the latest camera sub-system peripherals. All of this happens as close to the cameras to ensure fast speed and processing.

Customizable camera array solution with geometric and photometric calibration

Light has multiple camera array systems, ranging from 2 to 10+ modules, customized to your needs. We can optimize for optical zoom, low-light performance, or all-around performance. Create a top of the line camera that fits your layout and features that you want in your smartphone.

Our camera array enables improved form factors with greater performance. A 5 camera array with 28mm cameras can provide 2x lossless zoom or 56mm zoom performance without the need for bigger camera modules. We also collect more light (more than 10x), providing opportunities to use smaller modules instead of requiring bigger large aperture modules.

We also have a state of the art calibration system that measures and aligns multi-camera arrays. We perform photometric calibration to ensure highest quality of color performance in the resulting images. The calibration system consists of several hardware stations and corresponding control software and allows us to map how pixels in different camera images correspond to points in 3D space captured in those images. Using that data we can derive our precise depth maps.

Polar Fusion engine software

Dedicated software pipeline built to handle multi-aperture image fusion.

The software pipeline works on multiple platforms and devices, and can combine and fuse 5, 10, or even 50 images. The pipeline is built to combine images from different perspectives, as well as different sensors, apertures, and focal lengths. We leverage pixel matching, geometric and photometric corrections, and ISP algorithms in order to achieve our results.

This process can also include generation of a depth map with over 1,000 layers, compared to less than 10 with most other smartphone makers. And we are using machine learning and AI to improve it even further. The depth map creates whole new opportunities for what you can do with your images, starting with adjusting the aperture after capture. And this is just the beginning. We are looking into making the depth map available via API, so 3rd parties can leverage this data for 3D applications, mapping, measurement and more.
